NFU Water Summit 2025 – Working Towards Resilient Farming

Why the Summit Was Held

In July 2025, the NFU hosted a Water Summit in Yorkshire, gathering over 60 stakeholders including Defra Secretary of State Steve Reed, water companies, environmental NGOs, and farming representatives.

The summit tackled pressing issues around water quality, infrastructure, and resilience—challenges that sit at the heart of the UK’s food security.

Key Challenges Discussed

  • Climate change and unpredictable weather.
  • Ongoing water shortages and drought.
  • Pollution risks and nutrient management.
  • Financial and regulatory pressures on farms.

NFU’s Three Pledges

  1. Robust Data – Support pilots for farmer-led water quality testing.
  2. Advice & Information – Expand best practice resources and abstractor group networks.
  3. Partnership Working – Collaborate with regulators and industry on sustainable water access.

Why This Matters for Farmers

The NFU recognises that water management is no longer just about compliance—it’s about securing the future of farming. By working together, farmers, government, and industry can ensure water remains available, affordable, and sustainable.
